Messenger, an instant messaging service owned by Facebook, launched in August 2011, replacing Facebook Chat. You don't need a Facebook account to use Messenger. While the two are partially connected when you have a Facebook account, you aren't required to have one to use Messenger

Messenger allows friends on Facebook to directly message each other and have private conversations - much like texting. Facebook Messenger is available on both the desktop version of Facebook and as a separate mobile app.

You use Facebook Messenger to talk directly to people that have liked your page, making it a useful new communication channel. You can also advertise using Facebook Messenger.
