In today’s digital age, social media has become an integral part of our personal and professional lives. With its ever-growing influence, understanding the nuances of social media handles and tagging is essential for maximising engagement and leveraging the power of social platforms. Whether you are a business looking to connect with your audience or an individual seeking to amplify your personal brand, this guide will walk you through the fundamentals of social media handles and tagging, and how to harness their potential to the fullest.

What are @ Handles?

An @ handle is a unique identifier that begins with the "@" symbol and is followed by a username. These handles serve as a direct link to a user's profile, making it easy for others to find, follow, and engage with them. On platforms like X, formerly known as Twitter, the use of @ handles is ubiquitous and plays a fundamental role in fostering conversations, collaborations, and networking.

Why Tagging Matters?

Tagging goes beyond the simple act of mentioning someone in your post. It serves as a virtual handshake, a way to acknowledge and connect with other users, businesses, or influencers. When you tag someone, you're not only bringing their attention to your content but also encouraging them to participate in the conversation. This interaction can lead to increased visibility, expanded reach, and the formation of meaningful connections.

Best Practices for Effective Tagging

  1. Relevance Matters: Tag users and businesses that are relevant to your content. This ensures that your posts are meaningful and likely to resonate with the tagged parties and their followers.

  2. Engage in Conversations: Don't just tag for the sake of it; actively engage with the tagged accounts. Respond to comments, ask questions, and participate in discussions to foster a sense of community.

  3. Express Gratitude: If someone tags you in their post, take a moment to express gratitude. It's a small gesture that can go a long way in building positive relationships online.

  4. Avoid Over-Tagging: While tagging is a powerful tool, avoid overdoing it. Excessive tagging can come across as spammy and may result in a negative perception.

  5. Tagging on Different Platforms: Businesses may have different handles for different platforms so always make sure you have checked each platform before you create your post.

  6. Tagging Multiple Accounts: When mentioning multiple users or businesses in a single post, separate the handles with commas. For example, "@user1, @user2, @business."

  7. Be Mindful of Spaces: Remember that there should be no spaces between the "@" symbol and the username. If you include a space, the tag may not work as intended.

How to Tag People and Businesses in Maybe*

To tag businesses and people within your social posts via Maybe* you will first need to find the social handle of the person or business you want to tag. There are two simple ways of finding a social handle:

  1. Search for the social profile on your web browser

  2. Search for the company profile on the social platform you are creating a post for

Once you have the correct social handle you want to tag in your post, click create a new post within the Maybe* platform. Create your post and add the @ handle of the business or person you want to tag. When the post is posted to the platform your @ mention will be a direct link to a user's profile and they will be able to engage with your post.
